Recently, a pregnant Kourtney Kardashian decided to change up her hairstyle from jet black to a bit of a lighter look, and defended the decision on her blog.
Kourt, 32, wouldn’t be the only pregnant celeb who changed up their hair. While Hilary Duff was about seven months pregnant with her son, she went from blonde to brunette, but quickly changed it back.
While many have said that dying one’s hair while pregnant is dangerous, Celebuzz decided to talk to hair styling expert Philip Wolf to get the real answers!
What are your best tips or suggestions for a pregnant woman wanting to dye her hair? What is the safest way to do it?
The subject of hair color while pregnant has been a controversial and touchy subject for a long time now. I think there is still a lack of knowledge about the truth on hair color to the general public, and I feel this is what stops a lot of women from coloring their hair while there is a bun in the oven. To my knowledge, there has been no scientific proof that shows contact of hair color to the scalp will harm your unborn child. Many assume somehow the chemicals in hair color will somehow absorb into the scalp and or bloodstream and thus cause birth defects. I am not in the medical field nor am I a scientist of any sort, so I can not say if this is true or not. However, I do know that most permanent hair color whether over the counter or professional does contain ammonia, which is a toxic substance. While we don’t know how it may or may not affect us being on the scalp, we do know that inhaling the toxic fumes can be harmful. So my best suggestion for women who want to color their hair during pregnancy is to use a naturally based hair color that is truly 100% ammonia free. The safest way to go about it is to use safe products. And for those looking for 100% gray coverage should look here. This company in my opinion makes the absolute BEST ammonia free hair color on the market, because it is truly naturally based and really works well because I’ve seen it with my own eyes. From the darkest brown to the lightest blonde, it’s all 100% ammonia free and safe to use during pregnancy. We use this color line exclusively in my salon Shades in Beverly Hills. Another suggestion would be to have your hair colored using a highlighting or lowlighting method which doesn’t involve hair color ever touching your scalp at all. This way you get color and no contact with it, so it’s a win, win!
